ASX.TV: Doug Rickard – “The Photography of Doug Rickard” (2012)

Northern California based photographer Doug Rickard brings a keen eye to Google street view. He’s creating images that reference documentary photography of the past, but push the medium forward in controversial and compelling ways.

  1. we are all cameras from a different point of view…Doug attaches the longest of telephoto lenses to his camera and feels the color and personality of a distance…in a painterly sensitive production.

  2. How exactly is this art?  It seems like nothing more than lazy street photography to me. Does he even have permission from Google to use these images?  According to the Google Maps TOS: “2. Restrictions on Use. Unless you have received prior written authorization from Google (or, as applicable, from the provider of particular Content), you must not: (a) copy, translate, modify, or make derivative works of the Content or any part thereof; (b) redistribute, sublicense, rent, publish, sell, assign, lease, market, transfer, or otherwise make the Products or Content available to third parties.”
