ASX.TV: Eikoh Hosoe – “Barakei”

In this edited excerpt Eikoh Hosoe talks about his book Barakei, the classic collaboration between Hosoe and controversial author Yukio Mishima. Hosoe recalls “I told (Mishima) I want to photograph the life and death of yourself through you….” Hosoe discusses the significance of visual references in the complex images of the series.

This artist talk by Eikoh Hosoe took place on Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 at Aperture on the occasion of the publication of Hosoe’s groundbreaking Kamaitachi in trade edition, and the day before the National Arts Club in New York presented Hosoe with the Medal of Honor Presentation for Lifetime Achievement in Photography. During the talk Hosoe discussed his work in Barakei, as well as other celebrated series, including Kamaitachi, and Man and Woman.

Eikoh Hosoe is an integral part of the history of modern Japanese technology who pushed the boundaries of traditional photography, not only important for his own work but also as a teacher and an artistic ambassador between Japan and the rest of the world. He is the founder and director of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts and professor of photography at the Tokyo Institute of Polytechnics. Hosoe lives in Tokyo and is represented by the Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York.
