JULIUS SHULMAN: "LA Son..."

Case Study House #22, (daytime pool), 1960

"LA" is a state of mind. A feeling and a "vibe" and Julius Shulman practically drips "LA". To step into the photographs from Julius is to step back in time... to step back into the "modern" and into the sun, to lay on the sand and to feel that seductive and pulsating superficial energy of the starstruck land that we call Los Angeles. A photographic master that would become a legend and an icon beyond his craft, Julius Shulman left a legacy that will serve to keep generations in touch with the feeling of this palm tree-glittery-oceansprayed-sunshine-filled "land". Many strive to find that elusive magic, many live for it... Hollywood bottles it up and sells it to the world - Julius turned this obsession of form and "place" into a body of work that will never be duplicated.

Spencer Residence, Santa Monica, CA, 1950

Recreation Pavilion, Mirman Residence, Arcadia, CA, 1959

Go find his books, and get lost in the twinkling-sundrenched-palmtreed-George Jetson feeling of a place that exists in the dreams of young starlets, in the hearts of people searching for, in the heads of people wanting more - a place that exists in the physical reality and more importantly, in the collective myth...

Shine on like an LA sun/son Julius... you did damn, damn good.

Regards,

Doug Rickard

BILL OWENS: "Suburbia" (2000)
"Owens explains that, "the photographs for Suburbia weren't done by accident. I put together a shooting script of events that I wanted to photograph... Christmas, Thanksgiving, Fourth of July, Birthdays, et cetera. I got a small grant, and began taking photographs every Saturday for a year, so basically Suburbia was shot in 52 days..."

ANTHONY HERNANDEZ - "Phantoms and Dreams, Ghosts and Grit..."
"The 1970’s photographs of Anthony Hernandez possess something stupendous, something despairing and faint... lusciously strange… something that is fleeting, or maybe some would say… “hard to pin down”. Of course the aesthetic is godsmackingly gorgeous in its bleak ugliness…"
